What Are The Best Impressionist Composers To Listen To If I Like Contemporary Classical Music?

The Impressionist composers inhabited the latter period of the romantic period, roughly between 1890 and 1920, with atmospheric music that had ambiguity in both harmony and rhythm often granting an ethereal or otherworldly quality.
The pieces often avoided traditional forms (such as sonata form) and moved away from holding to specific major or minor conventions, shifting between modes and utilising dissonances and chromatic passages freely.
Aligned with the artistic movement of the same name, impressionism in both fine art and music shared the aesthetic goal of capturing a moment, atmosphere or mood rather than offering an accurate and detailed representation. The focus was much more on colour and breaking conventions of more traditional forms.
The three composers that are mentioned without fail when discussing impressionism in Romantic music are Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie. These three French males wouldn’t necessarily have agreed with the label of impressionist composers as they all had hugely varied bodies of work but generalisations about genre do make it easier to draw comparisons between composers. ‘Clair De Lune’ by Claude Debussy is acknowledged as the most quintessentially impressionist piece followed by the instantly recognised, ever-popular ‘Gymnopedies’ by Erik Satie and Maurice Ravel’s ‘Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte’.
Whilst Debussy, Satie and Ravel have become synonymous with the stylistic qualities of the impressionist part of the romantic era, there are other composers that were developing similar styles of music at the same time in different areas!
Isaac Albéniz was a Spanish child-progidy pianist and has some wild accounts of his childhood adventures. Many of his scores have been lost but his surviving ones have played a huge role in developing the nationalist sound of Spain and you can hear the folk song inspiration. He never specifically composed for guitar but many of his compositions were transcribed for the instrument and remain in the repertoire. Check out his masterwork ‘Iberia’ for some wonderfully Spanish sonic imagery.
Mary Howe was an American Composer from Richmond, Virginia. Her most enduring compositions ‘Stars’ and ‘Sand’ don’t fit perfectly with the impressionist style but there are certainly elements there. There is Moree structure than traditional impressionism but they still retain an ethereal quality whilst remaining grounded. Howe’s work is definitely worth checking out.
Germaine Tailleferre was a member of Les Six, a modernist French analogue of Russia’s ‘Mighty Handful,’ including such celebrated names as Francis Poulenc and Darius Milhaud. Whilst their progressive music and search for a uniquely French sound meant breaking with previous incarnations (including with composers like Debussy) Tailleferre retained a deep connection to musical impressionism due to her time studying with Maurice Ravel, with her music seeming to retain a touch more of an impressionist influence than her peers.
Toru Takemitsu was self-taught and was therefore more of an exploratory composer, not being bound by a specific style or aesthetic. He was much more modern, embracing Music Concrète and graphic notation but he utilised texture and feeling in an undeniably impressionist way. Aside from the obvious influence from Debussy, there are plenty of elements of Webern, Berg and Fumio Hayasaka as well as incorporating elements of Japanese Folk songs into his works.
