Musical Traits of Contemporary Classical Music: Extended Techniques and Integration of Technology

This is a difficult subject to cover in a few hundred words as it can cover a selection of innovations made by composers and instrument makers alike.

A key change in the last fifty-odd years is the increasing involvement of electronics and electronic instruments (as opposed to traditional orchestral instruments) in pieces either for different colours and textures or to be able to drive the piece in a different way. For example, the ability to automate a synthesiser to make a wave oscillate at a very specific rate and then change that rate in a very particularly controlled way allows composers to work on a very precise timescale whilst also allowing them to bypass using live players - this algorithmic style of composition might not be to everyone’s taste but it does allow for some interesting sounds and textures.

Plenty of composers, be they for concert or film/television, utilise hybrid scores where traditional string ensembles might be used with synthesisers and manipulated sounds. Personally, I very much enjoy blending traditional piano and string sounds with instruments treated through granular synthesis (where audio is split into thousands of grains and are then manipulated through speed, pitch, position etc.) and with the addition of a lot of reverse sounds. I’m a particular fan of using either a low piano octave or cymbal reversed to signal a new section; as the attack of these hits die away/decay very naturally it therefore crescendos very naturally when reversed - it sounds fantastic!

Softwares such as Max/MSP or SuperCollider can be utilised to process the sound of acoustic instruments in real-time during a performance. This can be done in simple ways such as adding reverb/delay or a modulation effect like a phaser or chorus or in a complicated way like utilising granular synthesis. This use of real-time processing and software allows for the creation of of multimedia performances and widens options for a composer’s palette.
