Phraxia is the third studio album from neoclassical composer and pianist Nick Pike.
Following on from Nick’s debut piano, string and electronics album ‘Norastoria’ (2024) and his more relaxed sleep piano album ‘Evergreen’ (2024), Phraxia blends impressive solo piano compositions with more texturally rich offerings, weaving synthesiser and electronic elements, highlighting his jazz-infused neoclassical style in different but complimentary lights.
If you like the relaxed and calming, yet musically interesting styles of Neoclassical composers such as Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter, Yiruma, Alexis Ffrench, Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahms then Nick Pike’s Phraxia is for you!
Phraxia’s first and third singles ‘Whispertide’ and ‘Abaluna’ share similar compositional qualities; they are both piano-led piece featuring subtly swirling synth lines and shimmering piano sounds giving an otherworldly quality. Written as a musical journey mimicking the tides, ‘Whispertide’ evokes calm despite moments of intensity, whereas ‘Abaluna’ (despite also being piano led) is designed to be more consistently contemplative and relaxing throughout.
Phraxia’s second single, Nick Pike’s solo piano piece ‘Für Beethoven’ is a half arrangement, half homage to the iconic Beethoven Piece Für Elise. Drawing heavily on the opening melodic elements from the original but playing around with them in a Neo classical style, this piece was originally written for some of Nick’s students to demonstrate how changing harmony underneath a melody can drastically change the feel. There are various points where Nick has played around with the original melody points and infused original ideas and melodic material. The listener is drawn in by the familiar Beethoven melody and then taken on quite a different musical journey.
The Phraxia single releases have already proven popular on playlists championing relaxing, meditative sounds for sleeping, reading, focus, writing and working with some ambient and cinematic playlists as well.
Nick Pike’s ‘Phraxia’ is out on July 11th 2025 on all streaming platforms.
